ST. LOUIS – A jury in March rejected a Northwoods police officer’s claim he was giving a shoplifter a “courtesy ride” after a man was found bloody in a field. Now, a judge has just ordered that former officer must serve 10 years in prison.
Not only did the defendant compare himself to Jesus during Thursday’s dramatic hearing, but the presiding judge called out an entire police department for its culture.
“This is accountability and justice for the victim of this case who suffered very serious injuries. An excellent investigation by the St. Louis County Police Department and presentation by our office and the Justice Department,” U.S. Attorney Thomas Albus said. “So, we’re grateful that today is a day of accountability and justice for the victim in this case, and we compliment the investigation.”…
