ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A Missouri man has changed his license plate following reports of it containing a derogatory term toward Asians.
Stephen Martchink, 73, the brother of the owner of the plate, explained to First Alert 4 that it was a nickname, spelled using the last five letters of their last name, Martchink.
Nickname dates back decades
Martchink said he is one of seven brothers, and all of them were called by the last five letters of their last name growing up. He said it was also his father’s nickname too.
“It’s just an always thing. Ever since I can remember,” Stephen said. “It was just, we never thought, we never imagined it was any kind of slur.”…
