ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Cahokia mounds near Collinsville, Illinois is the site of what researchers believe was the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico.
That settlement has been extensively studied, but geospatial researchers say new technology could help us learn even more about it.
“We’re still kind of digging into the data. So nothing official I would say to report yet. I will say comparing it to some of that publicly available data collected from a higher altitude, our resolution is is much better.” said Justin Vilbig, a Geospatial Data researcher at SLU. “So we’ll be able to much better discriminate between features to kind of see where things go. Kind of actually measure the limits of different features whether that’s like mounds or burrow pits.”
Vinbig along, with Casey Shanks and Craig Ackerman with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) joined Total Information A.M. Monday to discuss their study to learn more about Cahokia Mounds while making sure the Mounds aren’t disturbed.
