Former Missouri State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal announces run for Cori Bush’s seat in House

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – St. Louis City Prosecutor Wesley Bell won’t be the only opposition to Missouri U.S. Rep. Cori Bush as looks to defend her seat in Congress in August’s Democratic Primary.

On Tuesday, former Missouri State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D) announced her plans to run for Bush’s seat in the House of Representatives.

“It’s time St. Louis had a real choice in representation, not one between a Republican plant who’s failed at the biggest job he’s ever held and someone who has created more controversy than progress since we sent her to Washington,” said Chappelle-Nadal in a video posted on both her Tiktok and X, formerly known as Twitter.

Chappelle-Nadal has been a longtime figure in Missouri state politics, having represented Missouri 14th district in the state senate from 2011-2019 and from 2019 to 2021, she represented Missouri’s 86th district in the House of Representatives.

Most notably, during her time as State Senator, Chappelle-Nadal made notable comments on then-U.S. president Donald Trump saying on social media “I hope Trump is assassinated”. The comments drew ire from her party, leading to her removal from all her committees, Missouri Democratic Leader Gina Walsh, censured by the State Senate and former Missouri U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill
