Historic Jack Rabbit Candy Company in St. Louis made it through the Depression and WWII

The history in the walls of this building has been replaced with stories. For years, it housed the Jack Rabbit Candy Co.

This building is located at 1928-1930 Martin Luther King Drive in St. Louis, Missouri. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 9, 2007. At the time it was being nominated for the National Register, it was vacant. and the property owner was Jack Rabbit LLC.

The uses of the building included manufacturing, warehousing, and commerce. The foundation is concrete and the walls are brick and terra cotta. The architect was Herbert W. Powers.

Backstory

The building was constructed from 1909 to 1911 and was associated with confectionery and furniture companies. It was built for a furniture business and auction house. However, the most successful tenant in the building was the Jack Rabbit Candy Company which manufactured its candy from 1918 until 1952.

In 1941, the family-owned Jack Rabbit Candy Company was one of two St. Louis companies making candy.

Before that, Stoecker and Price and E.H. Langan Furniture companies were operating furniture and warehouse businesses in the building. For a short period, Mound City Auction was in the building.
