The brutal murder of an unidentified girl, affectionately known as “Hope” or “Precious Hope,” continues to haunt the nation decades after her lifeless body was discovered in the basement of an abandoned apartment building in St. Louis, Missouri. Found on February 28, 1983, the victim, estimated to be between eight and eleven years old, had been subjected to unimaginable violence, including strangulation, s.a, and decapitation.
The grim scene was uncovered by two men searching for a pipe to repair their van. What they encountered was beyond comprehension – the headless body of an African-American child, clad only in a yellow sweater, her hands bound behind her back with red and white nylon rope. Initial assumptions about her background were dispelled upon closer examination, revealing she had not yet reached puberty. Despite intensive efforts, her head was never recovered, hindering traditional identification methods.
Law enforcement’s initial findings suggested that the murder did not occur at the site where her body was discovered. Further analysis, including mold tests conducted by the Missouri Botanical Garden, indicated she had been killed within days of her discovery. Her prepubescent state, along with the absence of distinct marks or deformities, presented a challenge in identifying her. Despite collecting fingerprints, footprints, and DNA evidence, her identity remained elusive.
