ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis Circuit Court judge signed an arrest warrant on Wednesday for a man wanted for a fatal shooting earlier this year in the city’s Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened just before 9 p.m. on April 22 in the 1600 block of Hamilton Avenue.
Investigators learned the victim, Daniel Hughes, was shot while standing on the sidewalk. Hughes was taken in a private vehicle to the hospital, where he later died. He was 27.
Investigators believed Hughes to be the victim of a drive-by shooting and later identified a vehicle of interest that was in the area at the time of the incident.

Police said detectives used license plate readers, RTCC cameras, and the vehicle’s internal GPS to track its movements in the day leading up to the shooting. Detectives determined the vehicle had been rented out of state.
Surveillance video from the rental business helped investigators identify a possible suspect – Anthony Tobias-Haywood, 29. Police said detectives obtained cell phone and location data from that day, which was consistent with the location data on the vehicle. The phone was turned off just before the shooting and then turned on afterward.
