St. Louis man sentenced for pulling knife on juvenile detention center counselor

ST. LOUIS – Rather than face trial next week for pulling a knife on a Juvenile Detention Center counselor, a St. Louis man appeared in court on Thursday to plead guilty and hear his sentence.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office said Brandon Terry, 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping and attempted escape from custody.

Terry faced an additional three felony charges; those were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

Terry told the court that he pulled a makeshift knife on a counselor who was working at the detention center on July 15, 2021. Terry was 18 at the time.

Prosecutors said Terry hid the weapon under his shirt and told the counselor that they would be leaving together.

When the counselor tried to get away, Terry grabbed her by the hair and threatened to stab her. Additional employees at the detention center raced to the counselor’s aid and disarmed Terry.

A St. Louis Circuit Court judge sentenced Terry to seven years in state prison, with a little over three years of credit for time served.
