Saint Louis Zoo euthanizes 17-year-old African lion

ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis Zoo announced on Monday the passing of an elderly African male lion, ‘Ingozi.’

The zoo shared on Facebook , they “humanely euthanized” the lion on Friday due to advanced liver and spinal disease. Ingozi leaves behind his 19-year-old partner and female lioness “Cabara” at “Big Cat Country” and multiple litters of cubs.

Ingozi was born in 2007 at the San Diego Zoo and was moved to the St. Louis zoo shortly after his birthday. The Animal Care and Animal Health teams at the zoo provided care to Ingozi throughout his time.

“Ingozi was known for his impressive roar and magnificent mane,” the zoo said on Facebook. “Ingozi will be greatly missed by his care team and all who knew him.”
