Hancock & Kelley: Fallout of I-55 fatal shooting, GOP gun bills, Missouri voter ID

ST. LOUIS – It was another Sunday morning of sometimes heated but always civil political debate on Hancock and Kelley for Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024.

Republican consultant John Hancock and Democratic consultant Michael Kelley discuss the following topics:

  • Colin Brown, a 16-year-old high school student, was killed by errant gunfire during a rolling gun battle while his father was driving him home on Interstate 55 through south St. Louis following his hockey game.
  • Missouri Republican lawmakers and Attorney General Andrew Bailey will seek to undo local gun restrictions in St. Louis and Kansas City.
  • AG Bailey says certain abortion restrictions like parental consent for minors should stand, even though Missouri voters recently approved Amendment 3, granting unrestricted access to abortion in the state. Republican lawmakers plan to introduce a new amendment on the ballot, keeping abortion access but on a more limited basis.
  • The voter photo ID requirement in Missouri has successfully passed a significant court test in Cole County. The Missouri Supreme Court will now hear the case on appeal.
  • Multiple nominees for President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet are facing bomb threats and so-called swatting attempts.
  • Trump threatens tariffs against Mexico. Mexico’s president responds with a tariff threat of her own against the United States.
  • Former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens seeks a job in the Trump administration and claims a Trump adviser wanted him to pay a fee in exchange for support of a Greitens appointment.
  • Our quote of the week was from Vice President Kamala Harris, who vowed to “stay in the fight” in her first public comments since conceding the election more than three weeks ago.
