Celebrations turned deadly outside the Wheelhouse in downtown St. Louis overnight when a man was shot and killed by a security guard. The man was armed according to Major Janice Bockstruck with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
“[The security guard] said he told the individual to drop his weapon and then he fired at the suspect, shooting him in the chest.”
St. Louis City Police say it was an off-duty Leadington Police Officer with 18 years of police experience working with other security guards, trying to control a large fight that erupted at 10th and Spruce around 3 a.m.
“At least one officer deployed mace trying to break up the fight,” according to Major Bockstruck, “all the officers were out here trying to address this fight here in the middle of the street.”
Police say the man later died at the hospital. A 26-year-old was also taken to the hospital from the fight with a graze wound.
