ST. LOUIS – As ice and snow accumulate on roadways across the St. Louis region, driving has become more treacherous, and conditions will only worsen throughout the day Sunday.
Across the entire St. Louis metropolitan area, snow has covered roadways with a mixture of sleet and even freezing rain. MoDOT and IDOT crews have been working the roadways to clear the accumulating snow.
Drivers are advised to travel slowly, even avoid all travel if possible, and be respectful of MoDOT and IDOT trucks and other drivers on the roadways.
In one crash that was reported, a tractor trailer was seen on Interstate 64 jackknifed Sunday morning on the Illinois side of Popular Street Bridge.
Accumulations are expected to continue to build through the morning, and by early afternoon the heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain will continue. By 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the winter mix will become lighter and patchy for several hours into the evenings.
By Sunday night, the backside of the winter storm will arrive with gusts of wind, and the snow is expected to end before sunrise on Monday.
