Snow day calculator: Predicting winter storm school closures

ST. LOUIS — As a major winter storm bears down on the I-70 corridor, many students and teachers want to know if they’re having a snow day tomorrow. Well, it turns out there’s an app for that.

The Snow Day Calculator predicts the chances of a snow day. It uses an algorithm that has grown from a middle school project to a nationwide phenomenon, with over 5 million unique users a year.

The calculator, which requires only a zip code to generate predictions, warns about hazardous weather conditions that have the potential to close schools. The National Weather Service reports that this weekend’s storm is already causing power outages and strongly discourages travel today and tonight.

Unfortunately, the calculator can only predict if your school may close because of the weather. The official call will come from the school or business.

Created by David Sukhin in 2007 while he was in middle school, the Snow Day Calculator uses National Weather Service data to analyze factors including storm timing, wind conditions, temperature, and ice forecasts. The system also considers historical closure patterns for specific schools and regions.
