ST. LOUIS — Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) crews are making headway clearing snow-covered roads in District 8. However, blowing snow continues to create hazardous conditions, particularly on highway ramps.
Joe Monroe, IDOT Operations official for District 8, reported that chemical treatments applied overnight are helping crews plow, especially where cloud cover helped retain pavement warmth. “We just really need to get the wind to calm down now that the snow shut off,” Monroe said during a morning update.

Ramps remain particularly problematic because the curves allow drifting snow to accumulate. Monroe explained that while crews prioritize clearing main interstate routes, ramps are typically addressed later.
Drivers who become stuck are advised to move to the side of the road if possible and contact law enforcement. The department maintains dedicated emergency response teams around major river crossings to ensure access to essential services remains available.
