Overland man charged with fatal shooting of father

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A family confrontation at an Overland home resulted in a man shooting his father to death, according to investigators.

According to the Overland Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18 , in the 9700 block of Holtwood Avenue.

Police said Devon J. Stabler was angry over a family matter and confronted his father, James Stabler. Devon, who was armed with a rifle, shoved his father to the floor and injured the man’s hip.

The confrontation went from the kitchen to the back bedroom and finally to the living room, where Devon took out a 9mm pistol and shot his father multiple times.

Police said Devon’s mother called 911. Dispatchers reportedly heard Devon threaten to kill his mother during the call.

An arrest warrant was served to Devon Stabler on Jan. 2, 2025, and he was taken into custody. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He remains jailed on a $500,000 cash-only bond. No court date was mentioned in online records.
