Former residents share stories of life in now-demolished Pruitt-Igoe housing project

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Former members of the troubled community once hailed as an answer to the city’s housing crisis gathered on Sunday at the site of the now long-demolished Pruitt-Igoe housing project.

On Sunday, a historic marker was unveiled at the site, bound by Cass Avenue to the north and North Jefferson to the west. Former residents gathered at a nearby church to share stories of life in the units and enjoy music, activities and food offered at the event.

Construction began on the sprawling complex in 1951 and was completed in 1955. When completed the complex had 33 buildings, each with 11 stories, that housed thousands of residents…
