St. Louis family files wrongful death lawsuit in fatal police shooting of teen in 2024

ST. LOUIS — The family of a teenage boy shot and killed by a St. Louis police officer in June of 2024 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the officer and the city.

The boy, whose name was not released by police or included in the lawsuit, was shot in the head while running away from a stolen vehicle following a police pursuit on June 18. Police said the boy pointed a gun at officers before the officer shot and killed him, but the lawsuit claims the boy did not have a functioning gun on him.

The lawsuit, filed by attorney Albert Watkins on behalf of the boy’s parents Shaina Wilkins and Emanuel Mays, said the boy did not have a functional weapon on him at the time of his death. The lawsuit said he had a “disassembled firearm, which was comprised of multiple pieces and incapable of being discharged” in his pocket at the time of his death…
