Retired judge has St. Louis’ toughest job: Lawyer to Sheriff Alfred Montgomery

Retired judge David Mason is once again involved in the affairs of the 22nd Circuit Court, taking a job as an attorney for Sheriff Alfred Montgomery, who in less than six months has managed to rack up an impressive number of scandals—using deputies to drive his kids to and from school, making a deputy roll golden dice to keep his job, purchasing a $10,000 camera-equipped robot (described as a Roomba with a camera attached, and a bit of a letdown among staff), and most recently dropping $28,000 on badges.

Mason is hoping to right the ship.

The job is part-time (it pays $15,000 a year). But, Mason says, “I’m giving him all the time I can. He’s going to get way more $15,000.”…
