Former St. Louis police chief reaches settlement with city in wife’s death

ST. LOUIS – The City of St. Louis has reached a settlement in a wrongful death suit filed by the former police chief after his wife was crushed by a falling piece of concrete while driving in the city.

According to court documents obtained by FOX 2 News, the city will pay Joe Mokwa and his attorneys $505,000. Mokwa appeared in court Monday with his lawyer. The court ordered payments of $251,244.52 to the former police chief and $253,755.48 to the law firm of Bruntrager and Billings, PC.

Prominent businesswoman Janet Torrisi-Mokwa was killed on July 23, 2018, while driving on Forest Park Parkway beneath the intersection of Lindell and Union boulevards.
