A carjacking incident in south St. Louis escalated on Tuesday when a 16-year-old suspect fleeing from police was struck by a police SUV. According to Fox 2 Now, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department was alerted to a stolen vehicle in the Bevo neighborhood by the city’s Real-Time Crime Center.
Following the alert, officers spotted the vehicle in the Gravois Park area and initiated a traffic stop; however, the young driver attempted to flee, resulting in a pursuit ending with the vehicle crashing near California Avenue and Potomac Street, according to KSDK. The teenager then left the crashed car and continued on foot; this continued through the neighborhood until a police SUV, actively responding to the situation, collided with the suspect as he ran onto the street near South Compton Avenue and Gasconade Street.
An air support helicopter had been deployed to assist in the search and played a role in locating the suspect before the collision took place. Despite the dramatic encounter, the teen was described as alert and stable when he was transported to the hospital following the event.
