US manufacturing has had a rough 2025.
And unfortunately, there are lots of signs that worse could be to come.
Missouri is no exception – the economy is being rocked by the closure of three important factories.
Here are the details:
3 factories lost
- Royal Canin shut down its pet food production facility in Rolla in April, with 85 jobs lost immediately and another 20 layoffs scheduled to occur by the end of the year.
- Silgan Plastics is closing down its Hazelwood plant in phases this year, with plans to shift packaging operations elsewhere. (Silgan makes cartons and canisters for various ready-to-eat and ready-to-drink products, including baby food.)
- International Paper closed down its St. Louis plant, which had produced beverage packaging and containerboard, in April.
We’re seeing these kinds of impacts all across the food and beverage industries, unfortunately, so Missouri is certainly not alone in this.
The true impacts are personal
My heart goes out to the impacted workers – this is not a great economy for finding a new job, especially with all the manufacturing losses we’re seeing nationwide…
