FENTON, Mo. — An earthquake shook the ground far beneath Fenton, Missouri, early Friday morning, but it likely wasn’t felt by many residents.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that a 2.4 magnitude earthquake happened more than 10 miles beneath the community south of St. Louis at around 5:30 a.m. The quake took place almost exactly a week after a 1.7 magnitude earthquake happened around 137 miles south near the community of Bertrand.
Unlike the small Bertrand earthquake, Friday morning’s earthquake took place far north of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is a series of faults, or fractures between two blocks of rocks, that run up and down the Mississippi River Valley and have had ongoing seismic activity for centuries.
