‘You’re taking food from your neighbors’: Salvation Army temporarily closes to recover from 13 break-ins

EAST ST. LOUIS, Illinois — The Salvation Army of St. Clair County continues to rebuild after experiencing 13 break-ins over the past several months. The crimes forced the nonprofit to close its food pantry in East St. Louis.

Salvation Army Captain Kenneth Jones said closing that crucial resource makes it harder for dozens of families to get the help they need.

“It’s so discouraging,” he said. “Words can’t describe the gut feeling when we would get a message from our team that we were broken into.”…
