Could lowering speed limits make St. Louis streets safer? Data says yes

ST. LOUIS — We’re continuing to dig into a story we first brought you on Today in St. Louis. 2024 was the deadliest year on record for pedestrians, and one organization is hoping lower speed limits will save more lives.

Trailnet is launching a new campaign centered around lowering the speed limits in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. They’re calling on city leaders to reduce speeds to 25 mph on arterial roads and 20 mph on neighborhood streets in St. Louis City. The big question is, will this actually save lives? Experts 5 On Your Side spoke to said it will.

According to a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, we are seeing a trend in recent state laws allowing for lower speed limits. Wen Hu, Senior Research Transportation Engineer, said they did two studies, one in Boston and one in Seattle. She said their new research found that even “small changes” in vehicle speeds can lead to “dramatic changes” in pedestrians’ survival…
