St. Louis Food Advocates See Spike in Need as SNAP Suspension Looms

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -Dr. Marty K. Casey unlocks a freezer inside her workspace, tucked inside a senior living apartment building. Every Thursday, she opens the doors for people to get free groceries — something she doesn’t like to call a food pantry or a food bank.

“I can tell what’s happening without even turning on the news because we can tell here at the center by the uptick of individuals who are coming weekly to get free groceries,” said Casey, founder of the Ungun Institute.

It’s day 20 of the government shutdown, and with the possibility of SNAP benefits being suspended on November 1st, Casey expects the number of families in need to grow…
