St. Louis, MO – More than 1,400 handguns seized by police are no longer on the streets. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department announced that its Property and Custody Unit destroyed 1,450 firearms last week, many of which reportedly had illegal attachments.
According to the department’s post on Wednesday, the guns were recovered by SLMPD officers over time during arrests, investigations, and evidence collection. The destroyed weapons were melted down and rendered permanently unusable as part of the city’s ongoing effort to curb gun violence.
Police officials say many of the firearms included illegal modifications such as extended magazines or “switches” that can convert handguns into automatic weapons. These modifications are illegal under federal law and can make guns significantly more dangerous in criminal activity…
