St. Louis’ plan to pave park for parking lot is illegal, officials say

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Board of Aldermen may soon vote to turn a city-owned green space into a parking lot, a move that some officials and advocates call illegal.

The space is called Interco Plaza. Google lists it as a park, the city’s website calls it a park, and numerous signs around the plaza list the “park’s” hours. But Alderman Rasheen Aldridge, and nine other aldermen, don’t believe the space is actually a park.

Aldridge recently introduced a bill to sell the space for a company to pave over. Opponents said that isn’t allowed under the city’s charter, which states any sale of a park must be approved by voters…
