Former St. Louis police chief John Hayden named interim city sheriff

ST. LOUIS – There’s a new sheriff in town. A judge has appointed former St. Louis police chief John Hayden as the interim sheriff for the City of St. Louis.

The move comes after Alfred Montgomery was charged with several federal offenses. A judge “temporarily” removed Montgomery from office as he awaits trial in his quo warranto case, scheduled to begin on Nov. 18.

Hayden, who retired from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in 2022, spoke to reporters on his interim title Thursday morning.
