Belleville lawyer sentenced for stealing from children of police officer who died in 2018, other clients

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — A former Belleville lawyer was sentenced last month after he admitted to stealing more than $1 million from more than 40 clients.

Jason Caraway, 51, was sentenced to 90 months in prison on Oct. 1, months after he pleaded guilty to six counts of wire fraud.

Prosecutors said Caraway was a partner at the personal injury law firm Caraway, Fisher & Broombaugh and used his position to write himself personal checks and falsify documents. Prosecutors said he had control of the firm’s bank accounts and used that access to misappropriate funds…
