St. Louis files lawsuit against state over sheriff appointment

ST. LOUIS – The City of St. Louis filed a lawsuit Friday morning against the State of Missouri in regards to who appoints a sheriff in the city.

The city accuses Hanaway and Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe for making false comments that the governor will be the leader to appoint a new sheriff to the position. Records seek the authority of the Missouri Supreme Court to correct these statements, saying “this responsibility rests with its chief executive officer, the mayor.”

“The City of St. Louis possesses the exclusive authority to appoint a sheriff of the City of St. Louis upon a vacancy in that office….Yet, both the Attorney General and Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe recently expressed the belief that the governor would appoint a sheriff of the City of St. Louis,” records say…
