Christmas wrapping paper can’t be recycled – but STL groups have you covered

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Did you know that you can’t recycle many kinds of wrapping paper or Christmas decorations? But don’t worry, there’s plenty of options — and it’s easy to see which paper needs to head straight to the garbage.

Brightside St. Louis says the best option for holiday gift containers are really simple — 100% paper wrapping paper; reusable bags and repurposed bags.

“The only paper that is accepted in our Blue Bin is regular wrapping paper and wrapping paper that is made from recycled content,” says St. Louis City Recycles. “If you want to get creative, you can wrap your gift boxes in newspaper sheets or junk mail.”

In terms of wrapping paper, they say a good rule of thumb is to throw any glittery, shiny or plastic-feeling paper into the garbage. The only truly recyclable gift wrap is non-glittery and paper-feeling wrap or newspaper…
