City yanks tax-exempt status for downtown’s Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum Theater downtown looks abandoned: its marquee bent, its doors chained shut, its future uncertain. There is, however, one change coming down the pike. After eight years of enjoying tax-exempt status, the 110-year-old landmark is about to cost its owner real money.

For the first time since purchasing the Orpheum in 2016, owner Jubilee World is facing property taxes on the 110-year-old building, St. Louis City Assessor Shawn Ordway tells SLM.

“We reviewed this in 2025 and did not find any evidence it was being used for tax-exempt purposes,” Ordway says…
