Catholic community reacts to closing of longtime school

ST. LOUIS – About 220 students will soon be searching for new classrooms, and nearly 40 teachers will be looking for new jobs after the Archdiocese of St. Louis announced the closure of South City Catholic Academy at the end of this academic year.

The announcement, made less than a week ago, has shaken students, parents, and faculty at the long-standing Catholic school that has served generations of families in South City.

Each year, classrooms appeared to grow more crowded, a sign to many families that the school was thriving. Instead, parents said the news of its closure has left the community grieving the loss of what many describe as far more than just a school…
