ST. LOUIS—A spokesperson for U.S. Steel said the company has already received applications from workers impacted by this week’s closure of Alton Steel, and plans to be involved with a job fair next week for impacted employees.
On Monday, Alton Steel announced it would close this week, citing “insurmountable challenges.” A total of 253 workers are out of work.
On Friday, U.S. Steel confirmed that it was working with Alton Steel to find a landing spot in Granite City for those impacted. U.S. Steel is ramping up hiring as it prepares to reopen one of its blast furnaces by early summer. The company said it was roughly a third of the way to hiring the projected 400 employees it would need, and that new employees have started working each week.
