ST. LOUIS — When you think of the Humane Society of Missouri, you probably think of cats and dogs, but this week, the organization took in a very different group of animals: rats.
The Humane Society recently took in 31 rats who were voluntarily surrendered when their last owner couldn’t take care of them anymore. The organization said the pack is very young, friendly and available for adoption.
“It actually would be great if people could adopt them in pairs so that they have a companion because they really do thrive better,” Humane Society Director of Education Jo Ellen Klepacki said. “Females can usually live together really easily. Males, they do best when they’re introduced at a young age, but they can live together as well. We do not suggest that you put male and female rats together because that’s how you end up with more rats than you possibly need, which is probably what happened in this situation.”…
