Historic Kirkwood home faces demolition after 150 years

KIRKWOOD, Mo. — A historic home in Kirkwood that is over 150 years old could face demolition as early as March, once the city’s mandatory review period ends.

In an email, the City of Kirkwood confirmed with FOX 2 that because the home is a locally designated landmark, it is subject to the city’s historic preservation ordinance, which requires review by the Kirkwood Landmarks Commission before any demolition permit may be issued. The city council does not have the authority to waive or alter those rules for any specific property.

In the meantime, over 1,000 signatures have been collected in a petition to stop the demolition of the Marquitz-Garesche House at 751 N. Taylor Ave. The demolition review period is scheduled to end Feb. 23…
