Severe thunderstorms possible across Southern Illinois on Thursday

Severe storms are possible on Thursday for the St. Louis area into Southern Illinois.

The Storm Prediction Center has much of Southern Illinois and the outskirts of the St. Louis metro in a slight risk of severe weather on Thursday. A cold front is forecast to move through the region on Thursday, with thunderstorms developing along the boundary near or just east of the Mississippi River.

The greatest chance for severe thunderstorms will be Thursday afternoon/early evening. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are the main threats.

“Confidence is growing that instability will develop along and east of the Mississippi River Thursday ahead of the approaching front,” the St. Louis NWS said. “The best instability is across central Illinois, with lower confidence in high surface-based CAPE values as we get closer to the Mississippi River.”…
