Fire crews respond to hazmat situation in south STL

ST. LOUIS – Crews from the St. Louis Fire Department say they are responding to a hazmat spill in South St. Louis on Wednesday evening.

According to officials, firefighters responded to 2101 Clifton Ave., which is in the Ellendale neighborhood, just after 6 p.m. The department says a 55-gallon drum spilled at a Chemical Factory.

Crews tell FOX 2 that the 55-gallon drum contained a small amount of nitric acid when it ruptured, damaging another 55-gallon drum nearby that contained hydrogen peroxide. Officials say the interaction involving the two chemicals produced an orange vapor cloud, which was visible when fire crews arrived at the scene…
