St. Ambrose Church anchors ‘The Hill’ with enduring faith, family, and food traditions

ST. LOUIS — On Sunday mornings, the streets of The Hill grow quiet. Storefronts are closed. Traffic slows to a near stop. And a steady stream of families makes its way up the block to one place that has long stood at the center of the neighborhood’s identity: St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

“‘The Hill,’ the Italian culture — there are three things that define it: food, family — that’s obvious — and faith,” said Father Jack Siefert, pastor of St. Ambrose.

For more than a century, those three pillars have shaped daily life in the historic Italian-American neighborhood. And according to Father Siefert, much of that identity radiates from the church itself…
