Two Rescued From East Alton Inferno as One Is Airlifted to St. Louis

What turned into a full-on inferno in the 100 block of Irwin Street in East Alton on Sunday ended with two residents pulled from a burning home and one of them flown to St. Louis for emergency care. Firefighters from several departments knocked down the fast-moving blaze and kept it from spreading, no small feat given the strong winds that complicated their work.

Mutual Aid Crews Battle Heavy Flames

The fire started as a box alarm and was quickly upgraded to a first alarm as mutual-aid companies rolled in from Wood River, Alton, Godfrey, Rosewood Heights, Roxana and Bethalto, according to RiverBender.
