Ville neighborhood recreation center wins preliminary approval for phased construction

ST. LOUIS — A city preservation board on Monday granted preliminary approval for a proposed youth and senior recreation center in the city’s Ville neighborhood, backing a phased project supporters said would expand Meals on Wheels capacity and provide a hub for intergenerational programs and emergency response.

The project would be built at 4161 Maffitt Ave., near the northeast corner of Maffitt Avenue and Whittier Street, on a parcel where earlier buildings were demolished about a decade ago, staff said during the meeting.

Applicants said the first phase would create an “intergenerational” multipurpose meeting space with restrooms at the rear of the site. Phase 2, planned for later when additional funding is secured, would extend construction toward the street with offices and classroom space…
