Missing and overlooked: Black women and girls disappear at disproportionate rates — Shemika Cosey’s family still searching 17 years later

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – The names Natalie Holloway, Gabby Petito and Elizabeth Smart became known across the country. 16-year-old Shemika Cosey did not.

Cosey disappeared from her cousin’s house in Berkeley 17 years ago. Her mother, Paula Hill, told First Alert 4 that she is still praying and hoping her daughter will return.

“She was something else. She was a character,” Hill said. “She was quiet, and she loved the kids. She always took care of the kids and the family.”

Hill said Berkeley police, the investigating agency, did not take her daughter’s disappearance seriously — initially classifying her as a runaway…
