New north St. Louis convenience store opens, bringing light to storm-devastated community

ST. LOUIS — A long-vacant corner in north St. Louis is finally buzzing with life again as a multi-million dollar investment brings fresh food and essential services to a neighborhood still recovering from last year’s devastating tornado.

The Gas Mart at the intersection of Natural Bridge and Newstead avenues is now open for business, marking a major milestone for owners who have spent four years trying to revitalize the property. The journey to the grand opening was nearly derailed on May 16, 2025, when a powerful tornado tore through the area.

“The roof was lifted about 15 inches from the building,” said Mike Jabbar, the store’s owner. “We had to replace the whole canopy.”…
