Clayton Drug Deal Over ‘Wrong Stuff’ Erupts In Gunfire, Police Say

A Clayton man is behind bars after what started as a street-level drug deal allegedly went sideways at the Dragonwyck Apartments and ended with gunfire, leaving a buyer wounded. Willie C. Edwards III was arrested and is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond after prosecutors charged him with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. The victim was shot in the leg and abdomen and was treated for those injuries.

What Police Say Happened

According to FOX2, the shooting unfolded on Jan. 2 at the Dragonwyck Apartments after the victim arranged to meet Edwards near the complex. Investigators say that meeting turned into a struggle, and during that confrontation the victim was shot. Police say Edwards then took off from the scene.

Officers later served a search warrant at Edwards’ apartment on March 25, where they recovered a firearm and suspected narcotics, investigators told FOX2.

Charges And Court Dates

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Edwards with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action, and he is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond. A probable cause statement reviewed by FOX2 says Edwards “sold the wrong narcotics” to the victim, which prosecutors say triggered the confrontation that ended in gunfire.

Prosecutors say Edwards is scheduled for a bond reduction hearing on April 2 and a preliminary hearing on April 14, dates that will shape what happens next in the case…
