ST. LOUIS – Crews began demolishing the tornado-damaged Urban League Plaza in north St. Louis on Wednesday, nearly one year after a devastating storm moved through the area. The start of the demolition comes as city officials approved $11 million in new recovery funding.
The Urban League plans to build a $10 million strip plaza at the site to provide jobs and resources to the community. While the demolition marks a visible step toward rebuilding, former tenants like Torlisa Nash reported that the road to recovery has been challenging without direct financial aid.
The Board of Estimate and Apportionment approved the $11 million in recovery funding on Wednesday. This total includes up to $10 million from the Missouri Department of Public Safety and $1 million from the Missouri Housing Development Commission.
