Sneak Peek at Upcoming Transformation of Southdale Library

Hennepin County recently unveiled design concepts for the new Southdale Library building planned for Edina. The new library will replace the existing 50-year-old building, which is the fourth busiest library in the Hennepin County system.

The nearly 8-acre property at the intersection of York Avenue South and West 70th Street was previously home to several county services that have since relocated. As part of the redevelopment, several acres will be returned to native plant landscaping to support sustainability goals.

The landscape design will manage around 95% of the annual rainfall, reduce stormwater runoff, and provide outdoor learning and play spaces.

Renderings show a modern, light-filled interior with designated sections for adult, teen, and children’s collections. The new building will also include meeting rooms of various sizes for community events.

Construction on the estimated $30 million project is scheduled to begin in mid-2025, with completion expected by late 2027.

The county has engaged with local residents, government agencies, and library patrons to gather feedback and ideas to incorporate into the final designs. Sustainability remains a priority, with plans for renewable energy sources like solar and geothermal.
