Australia Ford, a single mother of three, is due to graduate from Minneapolis College in May. She’s studying communication arts and is also a journalism student at Metro State University. Ford has been funding her education through scholarships for the past two semesters. She lives near campus with her two youngest children, as part of the Jeremiah Program for single mothers. Her eldest son recently moved in with her after his father entered a treatment program.
This change in her family situation led to unexpected financial challenges for Ford. She had to drive her son to school daily, which increased her expenses. The additional costs of gas, food, bedding, and personal care items for her son were unforeseen. Despite this, Ford remained committed to her education.
Ford sought help from Student Services at her college. Outreach coordinator Elma Osmanovic suggested she apply for a Random Act of Kindness grant. Ford was unaware of this grant, which could help cover her unexpected costs. The college also offered food and childcare assistance.
