Tonka girls soccer coach looks for title share

Minnetonka High girls soccer coach Jeff Hopkins isn’t the kind of man who wishes his rivals bad luck.

So he doesn’t wish Lake Conference leader Edina bad luck in its last two league matches. With that said, coach Hopkins wishes Hopkins and Eden Prairie good luck in their upcoming matches with the Hornets.

Both Minnetonka and Wayzata are a game behind Edina in the standings as this week’s action begins. The goal for Minnetonka and Wayzata is to win out in the conference and hope that Hopkins or Eden Prairie or both can derail coach Taylor Greathouse’s Hornets, who are defending Lake and State Class AAA Tournament champions.

Edina plays Hopkins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Hopkins High Stadium and finishes the Lake schedule in a 5 p.m. match against Eden Prairie at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Edina’s Kuhlman Field.

Minnetonka’s only remaining Lake match is against Buffalo at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Einer Anderson Stadium on the Minnetonka High campus.

Coach Hopkins isn’t surprised that Edina has come back with another strong team this season after winning the State Class AAA Tournament with a 22-0-0 record last season. Star forward and Minnesota Ms. Soccer Award winner Izzy Engle graduated and is playing for the University of Notre Dame. Two other All-State players, Ashley Thurk and Grace Pohlidal also graduated.
