Walgreens closing down at least one Twin Cities location

Walgreens, which is moving to close around 1,200 drugstores nationwide, will shutter at least one location in the Twin Cities.

The store at 4205 Egan Drive in Savage, near Sonic Drive-In, will close permanently Jan. 22.

A notice posted on the door states prescription records will be available at all remaining Walgreens locations, including the other Savage location approximately three miles west.

In October, Walgreens leaders unveiled plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years as the company looks for a financial turnaround amid tough competition, lower prescription reimbursement payouts and other strains .

Walgreens rival CVS is winding down its own store-closing spree, having announced in 2021 that the chain would close 900 stores by the end of 2024 .

Walgreens hasn’t revealed which stores could be marked for closure, however, the Associated Press reports Walgreens “will prioritize poor-performing stores where the property is owned by the company, or where leases are expiring.”
