Minneapolis woman, infant killed in Kansas crash, 10 others injured

A Minneapolis woman and infant were killed and 10 others were injured when a van hauling a trailer overturned on a Kansas highway Thursday, triggering a two-vehicle crash, authorities said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the van was traveling southbound on Interstate-35 in Sumner County, south of Wichita, when it overturned and was subsequently struck by another southbound vehicle.

Ernestina Eumaña Álvarez, 58 and Christian Gutiérrez, a newborn baby, both from Minneapolis, died in the collision.

Seven of the van’s occupants were injured, including a 55-year-old Circle Pines man and a 63-year-old Minneapolis man who the patrol said were outside of the van when the collision occurred.

Both of those men were suspected to have serious injuries, according to the crash report.

A 67-year-old woman, 47-year-old Richfield man and 27-year-old Rosa Gutierrez, who family identified as the infant’s mother, were also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

A one-year-old Minneapolis boy and 64-year-old Richfield woman suffered minor injuries, the patrol said.
